Graduation day – the day which culminates in celebration and recognition of all the hard work, effort and academic achievements of a university graduate. As these events loom on the calendar there may be some concern around what is required in terms of attire for the day.
Oxford University has very particular expectations and any students not wearing the correct clothing may be refused entry to the ceremony, so it is important to get it right!
Oxford graduates-to-be will be very aware of the solemnity, significance and awesome nature of the graduation ceremony. The University takes great pride in paying tribute to all its graduates, as it bestows its most precious gift of membership and degrees on graduation day.
Full academic dress is required for all formal ceremonies at Oxford University, and is normally worn with sub fusc underneath.
Sub fusc is derived from the Latin term sub fuscus – meaning very dark. We have listed below everything you need, in order to tick all the boxes for the most important date on your educational calendar!
You may choose from the following:
- A dark suit with black socks
- A dark skirt with black tights or stockings
- Dark trousers with black socks/hosiery
(Please note all socks, tights or stockings should cover the ankle entirely. There must be no gap between the top of the socks and the hem of the trousers, and similarly with the skirt, there must be no gap between the bottom of the skirt and the top of the stockings).
In addition to the above you will need:
- A dark jacket (if required) underneath the gown.
- Plain black shoes with a dark sole.
- Plain white shirt or blouse with collar and sleeves.
- White or black bowtie / black full-length tie / black ribbon
- Mortar board or soft cap. (Mortar board must be removed and carried, when indoors, whereas the soft cap may be kept on)
All this is to be worn beneath your relevant gown and hood as advised by your college – the Commoners gown / Scholars gown / Advanced student gown (also known as Graduate Gown).
